You Cannot Fully Open Your Heart While Carrying the Weight of the Past

It is difficult to fully open your heart to your partner, or to be truly ready for love, if you have never grieved the relationships of your past.

It is so easy to move from one relationship to the next without ever slowing down long enough to process what happened. This was a pattern that was evident throughout my life. When one relationship broke down, I would look towards the next person. I was constantly looking for love, but I never stopped to ask myself what I was really searching for in my relationships.

More importantly, I failed to see just how much I was running away from.

I was running from my childhood, from the brokenness I felt and from every relationship that had fallen apart. I did not give myself the space to grieve those experiences, understand them or take ownership of the patterns I was carrying forwards.

So, I would arrive in the next relationship with resentment, uncertainty, disconnection and fear. Although I wanted love deeply, there were parts of me that were terrified of opening up and being hurt again.

Without realising it, I was bringing the wounds from one relationship into the next. I would sabotage connection, look for signs that something was wrong and wait for the moment I would be hurt again. I could not see that my lack of awareness was helping to create the very pain I was trying to protect myself from.

I had never given myself the time to understand what I was carrying.

Looking for someone else to heal the pain

It was not until I met Lauren and realised how deeply I wanted to let her in that I became aware of how much I was still holding back.

I had not fully processed the wounds within the relationship I had with my mum: the resentment I carried, the lack of love I felt and the emotional disconnection I had experienced. That pain created a break in my heart, and I entered relationships looking for someone to rescue me, save me and love me so unconditionally that I would never have to feel the unbearable pain of my past.

But all that ever did was push people away.

When you expect your partner to care for the parts of you that you have never learned to care for yourself, love can quickly become controlling. When their actions do not match the version you imagined, conflict begins. Conflict creates breakdown, breakdown creates more pain, and that pain continues to accumulate.

That was the story of my life for many years: failed relationships, a broken heart, trust issues and insecurities that never went away. I was placing an emotional burden on the shoulders of the person I was with that was never theirs to carry.

Love asks you to become honest

When you truly begin to fall in love with someone, love asks you a question: how fully are you willing to open your heart?

You cannot be fully present in your current relationship while remaining emotionally trapped in the past. Your subconscious will keep looking for danger. You may feel that something is wrong even when it is not. You may struggle to trust, hold part of yourself back or keep one foot outside the relationship in anticipation of being hurt again.

This does not mean that you are incapable of love. It means there are parts of you that still need to be acknowledged, felt and healed.

Both Lauren and I have had to grieve our previous relationships within our current relationship. We have had to take ownership of where those relationships went wrong, learn the lessons they carried and release the weight we brought forwards with us.

We have also had to learn how to open our hearts to one another and build healthy foundations based on honesty, openness and trust, even when the truth is not always what the other person wants to hear.

Your partner may not want to hear that you are still grieving a previous relationship or grieving something you never received in childhood. But when you can speak honestly without blame, and your partner can meet that honesty with understanding, you create a relationship that feels safe enough for the truth.

It becomes safe to feel, safe to process and safe to be with whatever is present. That is how real security begins to grow.

Creating space for each other’s healing

I have had to witness the pain Lauren has experienced through the lack of love she received from men in her past. Lauren has had to witness the boy in me who never had the space to grieve his childhood.

She has had to grieve not having the father figure who could hold her in the way she needed to be held. I have had to grieve never having the secure attachment I needed to feel safe.

Neither of us entered this relationship without wounds. The strength of our relationship has come from our willingness to take ownership of where we are in our individual healing and to support one another without making the other person responsible for fixing it.

We have worked towards building a relationship forged through real, honest connection. A relationship where our hearts can continue to open, where the past can be processed rather than projected, and where we can release the weight of previous relationships instead of allowing it to shape the one we have now.

Because the relationship you truly crave is one where love can flow freely. It is one where your heart is no longer blocked by everything that happened before and where the past is no longer unconsciously controlling the present.

You do not create that relationship by pretending the past did not happen. You create it by having the courage to face it, grieve it and take responsibility for how it still lives within you.

That is how you stop asking your partner to pay for pain they did not cause. That is how you begin to trust what is in front of you rather than constantly preparing yourself for what happened before. And that is how two people learn to meet one another with open hearts and build a love that feels safe, honest and free.

Until next time, much love.
